Spinach Beet and Kale (dwarf Green Curled)
« on: February 13, 2009, 13:56 »
Got these free with Kitchen Garden Mag, never tasted either  of them.

What do they taste like?,  (I expect the spinach beet is like spinach but I've 'ahem' never tried spinach!)

The dwarf Kale sounds interesting with me container growing as does the Spinach Beet, it says its 'perpetual beet'.

Ta xx

Perpetual spinach is not exactly the same as normal spinach but I can't really tell the difference when I've eaten it. I think it is a bit hardier to grow too.

Kale is lovely and I grew dwarf green curled last year. It survives well over the winter and is often one of the few things that you can eat all the way through until spring. It does attract whitefly though. If you like dark green cabbage, you will like kale and perpetual spinach, they have quite a strong taste.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Spinich beet is pretty hardy.  Little early leaves for salad, big leaves for like spinach but a bit stronger, stalks like mild celery, gets frosted but a second flush in the spring.  V good value - to the extent we started to get a bit sick of it. It was always there and needed using up!  (Never happy ... :nowink:

Kale is also tough - can pick it thro the winter.  Tastes like the green leaves of a savoy - but harder to wash because of the frills.  But the skyrats love it too - need to net from seedling stage.
All we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic about (Charles Kingsley)
