Vegetable identification - please help
« on: January 27, 2009, 22:44 »
I bought a vegetable (photo attached) in a supermarket in the Czech Republic, mainly because I'd never seen its like before. I was running late so didn't have time to ask anyone about it before I caught my plane. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could identify it for me.

horsepooisgood - you can bring things back if it is for your own consumption and also under a kilo in weight.

mum bought me back fresh bread dumplings from austria,  goodies from italy have included parmesan, cured meats, a globe artichoke, dried mushrooms, pasta (dried)

all through the airport with no probs.

i think fresh meat and fish might be more of an issue.

If you like your kohl rabi i'm sure i've seen them in the supermarket (the T one) and also Lidls.

Yep Kohl Rabi

Easy enough to grow if you find you like them and the leaves can be eaten as well I believe bit like spring cabbage.

You can get varieties with purple skin, too (although I'm not sure the flavour is very different).  They're easy to grow, but bolt if you transplant them!  I think they go in in April or May like swedes.  Baby ones make a nice change sliced in salads.
