Aluminium preserving pans - any good?
« on: January 27, 2009, 15:32 »
Hi folks

Can I use alu preserving pans for pickles and chutneys as well as for jams?  I have an idea in my head that I can't, but don't know for sure.

Cheers

Oscar

I've got one of those huge ones and have used it for years for all kinds of pickles etc with no problems.

I personally wouldn't as aluminium can react with the vinegar and taint chutney and pickles. Stainless steel is your best bet.

I agree with Val about not using aluminum pans with vinegar. I have a large alu stockpot heavily pitted from when I forgot I and added vinegar. Got rid of all my aluminum stuff and bought either stainless or ceramic coated steel pots and pans.

You know what - I've just remembered we had the same at home when I was a kid.

OK will start saving and looking.  Thanks for replies folks.

Also was there some talk a while back that using them may lead in the long term to a higher risk of Alsheimers(? sp)

Use of aluminium pans in general were said to cause an increased incidence of dementia.  Better stick to stainless steel just in case!

We've checked ours and it's aluminium.  Have always used it to make jam, pickles and even our wedding cake in.  Bought it for 50p in a jumble sale.  Well we can't get any more daft than we are now (I Hope) so will carry on using it.

Yes Wighy, there are two of us out there! Mine is aluminium, and so are the giant pans I use to make curry in. Guess there's no hope for us then!! Guy at work reckoned he couldn't tell the difference anyway!! Oh well.

I've found a nice source for stainless steel pans at a reasonable price.  lenham ironmongers on Ebay.  They're not too far from me either.

The aluminium-alzheimer's disease link is unproven, and looking less likely as more work is done.
