Tomato Suggestion
« on: January 27, 2009, 08:09 »
I'm looking for an bush variety tom, that I can grow outdoors, good for salads as well as cooking and that offers disease resistance too.

I've narrowed it down to ROMA VF form Seeds of Italy.

Any other suggestions or feedback from those that have grown this one before?
My friend gre them last year but said they were quite dry and fuzzy.  :(
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

I've got some of those to try this year as well, got them as the write up said they were good for cooking so that's what I intended to use them for.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Have grown those before, I would say that is a great choice for you. Maybe last summer wasn't the best for toms, an perhaps that is why your friend had a bad expericnce with them.

As a different alternative I'd recommend Sun gold, or Gardners delight. Ok not bush varieties, but will grow fine, just loosely staked, I found. An they taste great, and are very productive.

If you want a Cherry type, Seeds of Italy do, do a great Cherry tomato which is of a bush type.  I think they just call it a rather unimaginative "Cherry Tomato" on the packet.  I have grown those in containers on the patio in the past, again great tasting toms.

Ive heard this a few times now,so Ive got a few test seeds planted this weekend, they're 18 months old, so may not germinate anyways, but DDs sent me enough tom seeds to feed a battalion so I can always have a do next year

Think they should be ok, if I rememeber correctly toms are viable for upto 5 years, could be wrong tho.

I've grown Roma in my greenhouse and I loved them 'cos they were meaty with a lovely taste and used them fresh in salads and also cooked.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
