Making a 'Yankee- bird nest

This is going to be another one of my teases. :D

Up until quite recently, we sold Yankee candles in our shop. When We stopped selling them, I dismantled the rather impressive display stand that the company provided and salvaged some really good pine planks from it. I've been saving them for a project and today, I'm going to be to turning them into nest boxes.
The ones that we already have up in and around the place are getting a lot of attention and we seem to be moving towards a bit of a housing chrisis.

Watch this space, I hope to add to the thread as time goes by.

I've spent most of the day tidying up my shed so that I could get into it to start on the nest boxes, so I havent actually got on very far with my task.    Here's my first decision, do I use some of this soft pine from the display shelving or do I make a real dez rez for the birds out of this lovely mature oak ?

Heres some proof of my endeavours on the tidying up front. This is an after picture, unfortunately I was too embarressed to take the before picture.

Now mine, is a real shed and here's the proof. My pot bellied stove with a rip roaring fire.  :thumright:

I'll be using these plans from the RSPB as a rough guide.

Nice one Bodge! The oak would blend in a bit better...would you agree?

I'll be able to tone the pine down with some stain. Using the oak is sacrilage really. It could and should be used for something a bit better but what ? :D

Odd you mention doing bird boxes now as today I've just been sniffing about the house for useful bits to make a few mason bee houses and a bat box. Checked out the wood store we went in today hoping for some free trim samples to decorate some bird houses but they no longer offer samples

Thanks for the link to rspb build-a-bird-box. :)

I've been looking at the designs for DIY Bluebird box posted elsewhere on the forum. It seems our UK birds are a bit less fussy than those over the Atlantic.... I think my carpentry skills will cope once I dig out some old floorbard. ;)

Get a nice shelf up with that Oak Bodger. Shame to see it go into the garden.

How many are you aiming to make?
