If you can cover the entire run, it's ideal as wet ground will ferment and smell and become 'sour' and acidic. You'll need to lime it and dig over every so often then.

Could you make a small shelter over the dust bath to keep it dry ?

Hi Rob,

The sand area is covered by the raised living quarters - it's right underneath, and enclosed on two sides by the wooden structure of the coop.  The sand seems to absorb the damp from the atmosphere.

Can you tell me how to put photos in postings?

No problem Pete.

have a read of THIS and see if it makes sense.

You need to open a photobucket account, upload your photos from camera to your PC, then from your PC to photobucket. From there you can copy to clipboard, any photos you want to post, and paste them into the message.

ANy probs, ask away. Took me a few goes but I got it in the end.

Hi again Rob,

Thanks for the photo posting info.

This is the first photo of the first chosen of our little family (Sunday, 14 Dec).  Me on the left, the farmer on the right.

This is their home, just before they moved in.  The sand area is directly under the sleeping quarters.  I've started on an enclosure to surround the coop now.

The photos are still a tad on the large side.  I'll reduce the next ones a bit more.

You make a wonderful couple Pete ! :D

Do they have access to a larger area all day ?

It is obviously too small an area in the run for them other than at opening and closing time. You will be compelled to keep postign photos now you have the hang of it
Especially of your new run.  :)

Was that me and the chicken or me and the farmer???

The farmer recommended keeping them in the coop for a couple of weeks so I'm getting the run ready asap.

We've had 10 eggs already, we're quite amazed!!  The girls seem really happy and always seem pleased to see us (or is that just my wishful imagination).

More photos soon.

You=food  :wink:  :lol:

I was thinking of you and the farmer but all 3 of you look very contented. :)
A happy farmer ought to mean happy animals. Seems to be the case. :D
