Perfect Manure
« on: December 06, 2008, 17:41 »
Im new to growing veg,and today I passed a local stables with big fence and gates around it. I was expecting to get told to go away! When I asked the lady for any manure? Yes,Yes please help yourself she said!! So turns out nobody ever asks her for manure, I was shown heap and heaps! Wow I thought! Years old some mature.I filled around 15 bags,The lady even gave me a loan of the stables Quad bike and trailer. She told me later that her horses are prize show jumpers 5 star. The only thing I was worried about was the sawdust in the manure? But when I dug into heaps,it was hardly noticeable. So I think I may have hit the manure jackpot! Just goes to show if you dont ask you dont get.

What about rain
I had a similar experience this year, just been back with my second load of 2 or 3 year old horse manure.

I read in a book though that you should cover your manure pile so that the rain does not wash all the nitrogeon out of it.

Am I essentially adding a wormy soil conditioner without so much nutrients if it has been rained on for the past 2 years?

Thanks,
LD

You'll have some loss of nutrient from the rain but how much I'm unsure. Personally I think it will still deliver a fair amount of nutrient, I used some stuff that had been stored for 10 yrs in the open, last year. The melons & courgette's loved it  :)
