Whats this on my soil?
« on: December 06, 2008, 16:17 »
I have some garlic growing in containers, within 1 week of planting the garlic some 'stuff' was seen   lying on the top of the soil,I'll try to describe it,  imagine if you can something the size of an ice cube, that looks and feels like clear jelly..........there are about 10 blobs of this on the soil of both my garlic containers, this 'stuff' isnt on any other pots just the ones with garlic planted in them.

I'll try to get a piccie on if no-one has any ideas.

Thank Karenx

The only thing i can think of is something thats put in the compost to preserve moisture, that swells up when wet :)

Definitely sounds like moisture retaining gel.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Or possibly 'dog-off' crystals. Can't remember the brand, but I'm thinking of the green ones that smell of calendula. They go big and jelly-like after it's rained too.

Ahhhhhhh thats what it looks like!

It's compost from a grow bag, so could that be what it is?

Should I chuck the gel thats on the top away i.e.  is it spent now? Or should I just leave it ?

You're bladdy clever you lot arn't you?

Altogether now 'Yes Karen'  :D

Leave it - it's not spent. It'll shrink again when it dries out, giving up it's moisture and swell when it gets wet again - and so the cycle continues!

Would it not be worth digging it in, under the surface it would benefit the plants more :?

It should be distributed throughout the compost, just that the ones on top will obviously show.

Hey up, it might not be anything from the compost. I saw on the news today of some wierd gel that has been appearing all over the north. Some of it has been stuck on tree trunks and others just lying around. The scientist on the tv said it was 99% water but no idea what else it had in it!

Gulp

What to do?  What to do?

Looks for pointy stick to poke the gel thingies with (that usually works).

Takes picture of gel thingies to send to local news and papers and Chatting on the plot.

Has hair done just in case reporters come a knocking.
