I've never heard that manure is bad for spuds  :o - my thinking would be the more the better. And I've been growing spuds for 40 years!  I agree that it's good for cabbage, though.

Looks like I'll have to change a habit of a lifetime as well!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What problems can it cause ??  I know your more likely to get scab in higher pH soils.

My understanding, albeit novice, is no manure for roots

Spuds are not roots - they're tubers.

Roots are such things as parsnips, carrots....

Well yes, but spuds are technically a tuber and are hungry feeders, carrots parsnips etc just go mad if the get too much food and split into weird beasties that are fit only for the rabbit or Ester Rantzen  :D

Its amazing how many contrasting views and advise we get on so many allotment issues, both on this forum and from fellow plot holders.

I suppose this is what makes it so interesting.

I was under the impression that manure is primarily a conditioner to improve the structure of the soil and contains little  food value.

My plot ready for the spuds is loaded with it

Sometimes scab is more likely on potatoes if manure is used in huge quantities I have been told. But the potato farmer down the road puts loads on his fields every year, and the crisp factory don't seem to complain.

I don't think manure (in whatever quantities) causes scab on spuds - lime is the cause of scab as far as I know.

The RHS agrees with you, they say it's more common on alkaline soils and in fact advocate the use of organic matter to help prevent it.
