Schefflera (umbrella plant)

Maybe Gobs or Mr Bouquet can help me with this?

I have a lovely tall healthy umbrella plant, growing new leaves all the time, and in good light in a 12 inch pot.  But now the roots are growing up through the top of the pot. Ive googled but cant find the answers...
1. Is it the wrong time of year to repot?
2. Its very healthy as I said, so will repotting cause any problems?
3. How big a pot should I step up to? I dont mind how big the plant gets as theres plenty of room for it.
In fact the bigger the better  :D

Thanks!
Paula

Hi Peapod,  Your plant is a "Cyperus", and they are lovely aren't they.
You would be best to leave it until next spring. Try to keep in a temp of at least 50f during the winter.  You should always keep the compost moist and allow the plant to actually always stand in water, especially now if you've got CH or fires on.  When you repot it you should divide the plant, but if you want it to grow bigger, then I should only go up by 2"s, then do it every spring, but just watch it, and if it starts to look unwell, you will have to do it sooner.  Just make sure that the compost is the same temperature as that already in the pot, and give it a good soak first, in tepid water, to acclimatise it.
But hey, what do I know, it sounds like you're doing it very well. Regards, Mrs Bouquet

Brilliant mrs B thanks!

I do all of the keeping it warmish and the water thing, so its working so far!

I thought Id ask before repotting, I dont want to upset it, its my very best behaved houseplant (unlike the cala lily and the amarylis)

Ill follow your instructions, as you are a certainly an expert  :D
