Who likes shade?
« on: November 11, 2008, 15:40 »
One corner of my plot has an old oak tree growing close by. I have watched the winter sun rise and move across the sky and have noted that come summer time, this corner will be in the shade for roughly half the day. Accordingly, I have positioned my bench (must have somewhere to sit and drink tea   ), tool box & compost bin here but the shade also covers one of the beds.

What would you plant in an area that will spend a portion of the day in the shade, which veg likes a bit of shade?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Lettuce is the 1st one to spring to mind, water cress, most will cope with a little shade,  but the oak will suck up a huge amount of water out of the ground so you will probably have to water more there.

Hi Sideways, Just to add to what Rich say's. I think Parsnips tolerate  partial shade. I planted some under the 'Munty' bean frame this year, and they're looking good!

our patch is surrounded by tall trees. we are in the process of cutting some of them down and thinning out the branches. but we want to leave the main trunk for the lovely free supply of leaves in autumn .we've got enough this year to fill two large compost bins .we will get round to making some proper leaf mould stores when the weather picks up a bit.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, but I think rhubarb likes a bit of shade. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Parsley doesn't mind a bit of shade, prefers damp shade I understand though but worth a try.
