repotting reduced strawberry plants from garden centre
« on: November 06, 2008, 11:38 »
I've just come back from my local garden centre with 30 mixed strawberry plants reduced to 45p each.

I've taken all the old leaves off so they only have the new ones.

Should I repot them, they are in 6inch pots

Am I likely to get a crop from these plants in the summer.

If i grow a few  in the polytunnel will i have to compost them at the end of the season?
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

Where do you intend growing them?

If in the ground you can stick them straight in. Plants should last 3-4 years before they get too old.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

well i've never grown them before so forgive me if i suggest anything daft.

I was wanting to grow some in the polytunnel either in,pots, growbag or to make use of hanging space in h/baskets - plus make a strawberry bed outside.

I have loads of manure & mushroom compost - do they like that stuff?

They should be OK in those pots until spring as they will be quite dormant.  They will be quite OK outside as they are very hardy.

If the outside bed is ready now, you can put them in, otherwise wait until spring & them plant here there & everywhere.

The manure can do no harm!

Not only will I have to give you credit for any success I have with my peas but now too with my strawberries.

The advice is very much appreciated  :D

I would get your outside ones planted out now, that way they will get a bit of an earlier start with a root system and you should get a better crop, give em some manure under the plants and water them in well, they are well hardy so will be ok through the Winter.

That's my job for today to create the outside strawberry bed. I've got anarea that is more or less ready just need to work some manure into it.
