What do I do with my broad beans now?????
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:05 »
I planted some broad beans a couple of weeks ago in my propagator in the conservatory.  They are sprouting now, do I pot them on soon and then do I put them out (I'm hoping to grow veggies in sacks and containers next year, but i was eager to try something now.  Helllppppp  :?

Get them out of the propagator pronto.

I'm not a broad bean expert, but I know that they are hardy beasts & do not need to be germinated in anything like the heat a propagator provides. Left in the warmth, they grow weak & leggy.

You'll need to strengthen them up & harden them off before putting them out.

Before we go too much further - how tall are they now?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oops sorry!  Its not a heated propagator and the conservatory isn't heated either, they are only about an inch tall  :)

In that case - pot them up, let them establish themselves in the pot. Keep them cool & my trick with indoor raised plants, (yes, sorry folks it's the foil!), is to place some aluminium foil behind the plants so that it reflects the light back. Thus they get illuminated from all side & stops them being too drawn.

Then harden them off. Keep them indoors at night, but outside during the day for a week or so, then totally outside for another week.

Then plant!
