weight of birds
« on: November 05, 2008, 17:36 »
Does anyone know the difference between live weights and dressed weights for turkeys, geese and chickens.
I am doing a few organic free range birds for Christmas and I am getting worried that the birds wont weigh anything like people are asking for.
Any comments would be greatfully recieved

Hi Steephen

Don't know if this is any use to you :?
Grannie Annie is the person to ask :)

But I've found this in my "Storey's Guide to raising Turkeys" book :)

I'll have a look around see what else I can find :)

With the chickens we usually lose about 1.5lbs with feathers, gutting etc, but more likely to be about 2lb with turkeys.

Actually I'll revise that.  If the live weight of your turkey is 8kgs, then the oven ready weight should be 6.6 kgs, but if your live turkey is 13.5 kgs, the the oven ready weight will be about 11.1kgs.  I just had a look t my list from Kellys turkeys where we got our poults from.

My problem is that the turkeys are coming up bigger than people want!!!!
