small chicks - one very poorly - help needed urgently
« on: October 14, 2008, 13:14 »
Hi, the 6 week old chicks that I wrote about a week ago have gone into their new (old) house. We have hooked up a lamp so they are still on heat. But today I have just gone and had a look and one of the 2 small ones didn't look happy. Had to give the children their lunch, by the time I got back out it looked worse. I have just brought it into the house where it is now not able to stand up on its own. I have given it some water with a teaspoon, which it did seem to want, but at a loss as to what to do. It isn't really opening its eyes and doesn't look like it has long left.

Thanks

Hi sheridal.
Sorry to hear about your poorly chick. I can't offer any advice I'm afriad but hopefully someone can help soon.

Only things I can think. Is it too hot, ie. can it move away from the lamp ?

And are there any draughts ?

Beyond that, I'm no help. :(

It was able to move away from the lamp if it needed to, and it wasn't that close, It is now chirping a bit, more than before anyway. Will just have to see what happens

Hi sheridal

What is the temp in their new house?
like Rob said are there any draughts?

Is it exposed to the damp air??

Dampness kills more chicks than wind & cold??

If it is drinking try a little bit of sugar melted into the water, another thing I've read is horlicks type drinks. I'll find that Info so I know I'm defo right and get right back to you

Sheridal

I have too many books I think    Can't find the article I was looking for :(

Think re reading what you said before the best chance you have is keeping it indoors.

Have they made the tranistion from Chick Crumbs to growers ok? can you be certain this little one has been getting food??

There isn't really much more advice I can offer at the moment, if you could give a bit more detail re poops and stuff

Just to let you know that the chick died this afternoon. I am sure it didn't suffer, just slipped away

Bless poor thing

Sorry I wasn't able to offer any more advice Sheridal :(

Keep a close eye on the others with this damp weather & them only being 6 weeks old it is a bit young still

Would you  suggest bringing them in then?? They do have a heat lamp in their house and there aren't any major draughts. I think this one was probably just too small, at least half the size of the others, but what the cause of that is I don't know.

Thanks again
Louisa

Are they outside with a heat lamp? Would be tempted to bring them in as the temp is dropping at night, this time of year they tend to develop more slowly than in spring anyway.
