Improving the ground ...
« on: October 11, 2008, 08:42 »
Okay, I'm confused (even more so than usual   )

I have the following items available:

pelletted chicken manure
garden compost
very very small amount of organic manure (remnants of a bag)
fish blood and bone
growmore
small amount of peaty-type thing (again remnants of a bag).

Which, if any, do I use now?  Or, do I delay using anything now until spring?

I know about not manuring where parsnips etc will be grown, it's a question of what to put on the ground and when as I have a rather confusing combination of products!

Thanks in advance

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think you save the growmore till a few weeks before planting,it should say on the box.Bung the rest in but dont strike a match.

Sorry. I'm intruding on your topic but I'm confused as well by the chicken manure question.

I've just got my plot and need to get the ground sorted before the winter obviously.  My OH refuses to go and get the pig manure which is free from a local community farm (he's muttering about the smell in his new car).  So I'm falling back of the organic chicken manure which I use on my garden soil with sharp sand (it's clay).  However, I notice it says use from Feb - late October but I won't be able to use it until November.  Does it make that much difference if you use it that little bit later?

Many thanks for any help.

I took my plot over on November A few years back. All I did was dig half of it over and the other half in Feb. Just before I started to plant I threw growmore over it.
Its best if you can get it manured, but if not possible dont worry about it ,but make sure that you do next year

Dig any compost you have in now (or just spread it on the surface for the worms to dig in for you.)
Get some well-rotted manure  or council compost to add to this.
Use fish, blood and bone, chicken manure etc in the spring, before you plant/sow stuff.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thank you all.

The bagged remnants, garden compost, and used compost from pots in the back yard will find their way onto the plot this autumn, once I've decided what is going where next season.

I'll hold fire on growmore / fbb / chicken poo till the spring.
