Slow growing
« on: October 06, 2008, 12:43 »
I've just been looking at Glen and vegmandan's photos (well done btw!) and am feeling rather disheartened.
After my first year of growing veg, I have really enjoyed it BUT - everything was tiny!
Sweetcorn was half normal size, onions never got bigger than pickling size, aubergine never got bigger than baby..... everything grew, but most seemed small or I got a tiny crop (green beans, hardly any peas etc).

I prepared raised beds with compost and manure mixed in and fed with dried blood and multi purpose plant feed.

Any ideas where I went wrong? Not enough watering? Not enough feed?

this has happened to me too...except my swede and a couple of other things
Ive put it down to the mad rain we've had, the onions were romping on till it nearly drowned them, then they just stuck at weeny   I also got things going a little late this year

I'm in south west France, but we had an appalling Spring.
I think this may have something to do with it. I need a polytunnel!

I think, you should stop feeding veg at haphazard of the labels.

If you prepare the bed well, most veg will need little if any feeding, unless your soil is deficient in something.

Constant feeding can do more harm than you'd think. And much more to your soil, depending, what you are using.

You might want to post your probs individually by veg, what went wrong and how as it will quite differ what they need, also could have a read on the home page about feeds.
