Can anybody give me advise on what things can grow side by side in an allotment and what things should be avoided?

Cheers,

Lee

Onions and beans don't like each others company, but there's always exceptions no hard or fast rules that I can think off, but I always keep these 2 away from each other  :)

If you follow a rotation plan then usually you have similar types of plants together anyway.

Tomatoes and potatoes aren't supposed to be grown together either.

Just Google "companion planting" and all will be revealed (she says hopefully  :D )

I got a companion planting wall chart from the Organic Gardening Catalogue.  It's a bit hard to read though as the type is dead little

I grew onions next to me beans this year, having only got the plot in May I quickly cleared a bed and chucked whatever I could in, which meant I paid little attention to what should go where. Both crops did really well, but next year I will be following more of a crop rotation plan, just to try and avoid any problems.

Organic...so far!

Interesing! Being a total novice I didn't know that, but I had 30 shallots and 30 garlic next to a solitary run of 20 carrots and not one carrot fly attack. The 70 year old farmer next door was cursing the carrot fly this year so I swanned round with my carrots and put it down to beginner's luck. Seems I may have been right!
