I've had my allotment 2 years now this September.  I was told you couldn't successfully grow swedes there and last year I tried and nothing came up.  So this year I didn't bother and grew a few on the flat roof at home.  I was weeding the brassica bed at the allotment on Saturday and dug up what I thought was a weird looking cabbage, and blow me it was 2 swedes!  Looked not very nice but had one in a stew tonight and it was lovely.  The weird thing is a chard plant came up there too that I hadn't planted

perhaps the old allotmenteers had bad times growing swede on your soil in the past  :(
I have always found them v easy both here in Ashford and on estuary clay on the Isle of Sheppey.
Try starting them off in a box of bought compost to give them a good start and then when sturdy little plants transplant to grow on. Always worked for me :) Worth a try anyway!

I had one in my row of cabbages, it must have been in the seed packet as I transplanted the seedlings. So yours might have been mixed up in the seed packet as well.
