Got our Hens!!!!!
« on: September 27, 2008, 20:39 »
We got our hen's at last. It was a bit of a rush though I sent a friend a message saying that if she had any left I would have a few. I got a call asking if I want 3. I said yea but had to pick them up today so it was a mad rush to get the gate up and buy all the stuff needed. We got it all done drove to get the chooks and have had to quickly chook ( Pardon the pun ) straight in the coop. it was 7.30 when we got away. They are rodeisland reds they are 14 weeks old.

Yes yes yes pick's will follow don't worry
Dont tell lies you get in trouble

Thank you I will be up there at 7.00 tomorrow morning with  the camera and to make 100% it is fox proof.

Is it best to put straw in the nest boxes or just loads of wood shavings.....

Good news Jim.

Straw in the nest box is best but they won't be needing it for a while yet. Not as a nest box anyway.

Your new adventure starts right here. Enjoy it  :D

ps. Ask loads of questions. It's compulsory. Even if you know the answers.

We need a sticky on this particular law, or at least a warning on the forum note (next to 'the hen house') 'Beware ye who enter here without photos'.

Good luck with them again Jimroden. Pop the straw in the nestbox now and they'll get used to it. Oh and pop some golf balls on the straw if you want them to get the feel of 'oh i go here'.

The fencing was from a school that was knocked down it is 2MM gauge and blooming heavy, ( cost me a 24 pack of larger). I tryed to make a gate out of it but with the timber and the fencing I could hardly lift the blighter so had to re think. I have loads left so I am going to put some across the back of the actual coop incase mr fox decides he wants to get in. I am going to get 6 more but they will be eaters.

As of names we have not decided I think it will be when thier characters start coming out of them.

Blinking heck, fort knox chicken run. They'd have to create a plane to get out of there....

Good luck with naming them it's a good idea what you are doing naming them when you can 'see' what they are going to be like. I know one of mine is officially 'lazy sod' and another 'zomg worm/slug/snail'.

Are you thinking about chicks at all next year?
