Advice needed with ex bats
« on: September 27, 2008, 16:24 »
We have had our 3 ex bats for 4 weeks now and at first one was a real bully.  Then things settled down.  This morning we woke to find that the 'oven ready' who was growing feathers nicely had lost some of her feathers down her neck and front and was bleeding.  We have sprayed her with purple spray, but are very concerned about putting them to  bed tonight. Other than separating her, does anyone have any ideas why this should happen now when we thought things were settling down.  Other than this they seem really happy and get really really excited when we give them grapes. They have been laying everyday since we got them, somedays we get 3 a day.

I know it sounds silly but could put a small t shirt or equivalent on her? I know Babe made one for one of her ex-batts.

Have been looking for her post but can't find it :(

Really good idea! Advice would be to do something quickly as when they start pecking usually gets worse so maybe separate her before she gets too bad - had an exbat make a real mess out of one of my cochins feathered feet :(
Was wondering if the specs that Bodger used may help? will have to dig out the post later.

I saw it suggested somewhere that you can cover the pecked areas with duct tape. Just stick it to the surrounding feathers not the skin, and new feathers grow underneath and eventually it falls off. Never tried it, but it would protect the damaged area from more pecking.

pecking

Hi thanks all, sprayed poor thing with 'purple spray' and this does appear to have done the trick.  The three do seem to have settled down now and less pecking if any at all.  They love the garden and get very excited when we come in.  I think they are great!
