Emptying grow bags onto plot
« on: September 24, 2008, 14:01 »
I a right in thinking I should take my blighted tomato plants to the tip instead of putting them in my compost bin?

If so should I empty the compost from the growbags onto the plot or not? It doesn't seem to make sense that I can't do one if I can do the other.

thanks

I would chuck it on the plot in the bed where tats are not going straight on, depending on your rotation it would be the bed you grew tats this year. Hope that makes sense. This is taken from the RHS..
Resting spores produced in dead plant tissue can overwinter in the soil to initiate infections the following season. However, the risk from this source of the disease is small compared with infection arising from air-borne sporangia. Infected potato tubers left in the ground from the previous year, or dumped at the edge of vegetable plots, are important infection sources for the following year’s crops. Potatoes are usually infected before tomatoes.
so I would think its safe to chuck on your plot, I have been doing it for years.

no, it's best to burn any tomato and potato plants affected by blight to prevent the spread of the spores  :D
