Definitely NOT an expert!  But I Have had a few crowns for about 5 years now.  My asparagus is in full sun, important not to let the ground dry out.  First 2 years I did not harvest ANY spears, just let them run to fern.  Stop harvesting in middle of June and let them run to fern. Cut the fern back around November, and they like LOTS AND LOTS of compost and manure in the winter.  The last couple of years I have had LOVLEY spears, well worth waiting for!  Am trying to find space on my veg plot to put some more, that is the main problem..... space!  Give it a try..... Good luck!

I think you will struggle to find any over 1 year crowns. Something to do with too much damage if they are over 1 year and moved, etc.

Just get 1 year crown (like me last year) and the years will fly by.. just hope mine actually come up next year as I saw nothing at all from the this year..

Those look delish!  Have no idea on "makes" of asparagus, I just bought mine from a garden centre.  When I get more I will go into the different varieties in detail. Would be interested to know which one you go for though.

In full sun, NP. Big trench, so the roots can be spread out, add mushroom compost  or manure and weed well. That's about it, in fact it is one of those little care needed plants.

Bought mine from the local Wilkinsons in about jan/feb of this year. Think they were about 2 for £1.50. I got six and they all came up and have been throwing up thick spears all summer long. Sorry i can't comment on taste as i have steadfastly observed the don't pick in the first year rule, but i think asparagus plants are usually very similar (unlike lots of other veg where there are lots of different types). The ferns have been so big that they have been blowing over in the wind, next year i will put some supports in for them after i have stopped picking.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

You're right there Brambles!  I'm salivating just looking at them!

My crowns were sold as 2yo crowns which I planted as soon as I could this year.  The ferns are thin and reedy, so will need a few years of love and poop to make them strong and ready to cut but they'll be worth it!

You want to leave near two feet almost, each way. Can be nearer one foot in rows, go generous if have the space.
