Outdoor tomatoes - still green
« on: September 09, 2008, 10:25 »
My outdoor tomatoes are all still green, but appear healthy enough.  Is it likely they will turn red this late now, or should I admit defeat and pull up the plants.

I have heard you can hang the plants upside down in a draft free shed and they will ripen, or picking them and putting them in a drawer with a banana ?

What does everyone recommend, or do I leave them in the soil in the hope they may turn red ?

Or, do I make shed loads of green tomato chutney

I have taken some of mine that were just starting to turn and put them in a bowl with a ripe banana and they have ripened a treat, I have also left a load on the plants and stripped away a load of leaves etc which concentrates the plants on the fruit

I have taken some of the green ones off my plants and left them on the kitchen window sill.  They are turning red just fine.  Last year my godmother cut down all her plants really early and gave us all the green tomatoes to make into chutney.  Well it was a couple of days before I got round to it and by that time half the tomatoes had changed colour!  They were sitting in a carrier bag in the kitchen.  Needless to say they never became chutney!

Moomin Mama, hello! I'm not too far from you. I had my first ripe tomato (ok, it was an orange variety not red) last weekend. A few others have gone red, but they all have bottom end root rot (note - should i leave this on or cut them off?) I guess yours will start to go red really soon. Are the tops starting to go yellow yet at all?

if it has passed its days depending on what you planted then, l would take it out and ripen them inside.

Michael - nice to know there is someone nearby !  The tops aren't starting to go yellow just yet.  Will wait another couple of weeks and see.

Damn the silly weather.  I went down yesterday to see how they are getting on to find the leaves all brown etc.  and they have been hit by blight I think.  I pulled up one plant and took the green tomatoes off them and that leaves one small plant with a tiny amount of brown leaves and a few tomatoes still on.

I may be in the running still - although we'll have to see !
