stuck egg
« on: September 08, 2008, 14:28 »
i went to check on the bantams and found that an egg was stuck to the backside of one of my bantams ,when i caught her and looked.the egg was out but still attached with stretched membrane around a bit of the egg,i soaked her and the egg in water and slowly eased the membrane off the egg it all shrank again but was stickking out the vent still so i pushed it in gently , i hope i have done the right thing ,can anyone give me some advice as to stop this again or hope she doesnt get infected plus it was her first egg and was perfect as well not soft like i expected

Hi JackB

The problem sounds like a prolapse, possibly due to the fact that her first egg was quite big :?

Have a read through this post if it looks like it's come out again,

http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=22481&highlight=prolapse

Luckily for me I've never had this with any of my girls, although I have had a Goose with an egg stuck, but that was higher up inside not as you discribe out but attached.

Hope it's of some help

Sarah :)

You did exactly the  right thing :D

Keep an eye on her and if it happens again you could try some haemorrhoid cream to help reduce any swelling.

kept an eye on her yesterday and after reading about prolapses etc i went to the chemist and got some prep h and some savlon wound wash ,and put both on her around her vent. when i let her out this morning she was her normal inquisitive self and on checking her she seemed normal no swelling or  redness so i hope that will be ok and she doesnt get an infection from me touching and pulling the membrane from the egg.
No egg so far this morning so i dont know if she will lay again today as not sure when they start how regular they are ,but i think it may have put her off for a bit, thank you for the advice and i read the forum nearly everyday and is a great help . ps how do i add a pic to my messages
