one of my hens seemed to have a dirty bum , On closer inspectiom she seems rather large and may have an egg stuck there , she was in a nest box whick is unusual for her , she may have been trying to lay a egg , she is an older bird which was giffted to me 3 month ago when i started poultry she has not layed an egg before that i have noticed , Addvice would be much appriciatted ,

hi kenny,

try a little liquid pariffin around her vent (or cooking oil) and seperate her from the others somewhere thats a little bit warmer. she should then lay the egg in the next 24 hours or so.

try this and let us know how she gets on.

Good advice from babe, you could also try holding her over steam, but be careful not to scald her

If you feel her abdomen you will feel the egg as a hard lump.  But if she is swollen and you can't feel an egg then she may have egg peritonitis.  If that is the case you may decide to cull her rather than take her to the vets for antibiotics  :cry:

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE , I lubed my finger and put it in to try and find an egg as an article i found though this site sugested , i managed to put my finger down the way ( all my finger ) but did not find a duct for the egg  (upwards as explained in article)  I bathed the hen and have puy her in the boiler room for the night .  Any other sugestions ( bit worried i didnt find duct for egg )  Cheers  ,kenny D  :roll:

I thnk you would have felt an egg if there was one there.  Could be another condition causing her to swell up.

ermmmm  :oops: its was the wrong hole .you need to insert finger ( lubed )  :shock: and look for a " tube " at the top and bottom . the one with the dirty end ...... is the the " wrong " hole .
as sally said you may have an egg bound hen the trick is to lube the egg duct  and then put 2 fingers over the tummy feeling for an oval " hard " thing this will be an egg,,,,,,,,, to help its travel just use 2 fingers and ease the lump towards the anus... the other " mucky " hole over the tummy . egg peritonitus is posible but i would'nt think this until id made the checks for an egg bound hen .to help counteract this in future dump loads of dandelion leaves and other greens in for the birds to eat ..see also these other tips to help them.

Thanks again for all the advice , Does the egg come out the same hole as it's poo ?, I can only see one hole , Is the duct for the egg within that hole ? When i lift her I can feel what i belive is an egg at the rear (feels the right shape & is solid ) but cant find it with my finger . She is going to the nest box often and looks like she's trying to lay , Am getting a little bit worried about her  , all help appriciated

I would like to say thanks to every one who helped with my problem , i came on the site in a bit of a panic and hope i didn't come accross abrupt ,   Im sorry to say i had to put my hen to sleep yasterday as it was begining to suffer . But thanks again fo the help as i now have a much better understanding of every thing :roll:
