I have 2 areas i want to  hoe up and reduce the pebbles so i can actually grow some things on the plots. One has direct sunlight the other has shade. Shall i do a soil ph tester  before i start raking and hoeing the ground. Also is my aim to get rid of a top layer of pebbles , ideally how long shall i spend getting rid of pebbles.

I think once you move on pebble you will end up moving a thousand and never stop!

Dig and see what you have there.

For a new plot i would plant potatoes, this would break the soil up, and make it more workable

Unless its particularly bad, I wouldn't bother trying to get rid of the pebbles - in time, the ones underneath that top layer eventually work their way up and you'll be thinking you are growing them   They do no harm to plants.

However, I would highly recommend you try & grow your carrots & parnsips in deep containers (crates/bins/old bath tub etc) of fine sandy soil/compost mix otherwise the growing root tip will grow round the stones or fang and you'll end up with some rather useless bizarre things

I cleared a few carrier bags of stones off my plot and these carrots did ok



I missed some tho and got these as well!



I just picked out all the stones to a spade depth although the ones below will work their way up, as has been said
