Problems with potato storage - blight?? - pictures
« on: August 27, 2008, 20:18 »
Hi,

I pulled up my potatoes (Nadine - second early) about 5 weeks ago and have them in storage in hesian sacks in my garage.

I have noticed that a few of the tubers are going slightly soft to the touch. I was even concerned that I saw some black spots on a potato that could be blight.

Any thoughts?

Photo not the best but you can see dark spots.

Thanks

What can be seen, is rather looking like black scurf and is no major concern for storing, just peels away, like scab.

The watery looking large patch in the background - if that's the same in real life - would make me move such pots out of the rest and make use of it, if usable, quickly.

None of them are blight, I so do think.

close up pic is def black scurf and as Gobs says nothing to worry about, just cosmetic, the ones in the sack are not clear enough for me to form any opinion

Blight on stored potatoes appears as a greyish shadow ,it quickly breaks down in that area first and when pressed your fingers with go into it and it will smell.Checking your potatoes every couple of days mean that you will only loose the affected ones, this is easier in a newspaper lined box and it is easier to check any tubers in contact with the blighted ones.
