Can he start again??
« on: August 26, 2008, 13:20 »
Hi

I dont know if anyone can offer any help, im here on behalf of my dad.  He had 4 hens then got another 4 and now sadly has none.  To try to cut a long story short the vet prescribed Tylan for Mycoplsma and one by one they have died.

Dad now wants to start over but this time he'll get 10 birds together rather than a smaller amount then add to them.

What can he do to make sure all of the bacteria has gone, i have told him to disinfect with Jeyes fluid and then wait a couple of weeks before getting any more hens.

Would you recommend a different disinfectant?, any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

He certainly can start again !!!!

Some Mycoplasmas are unfortunately gaining immunity to Tylan nowadays :(

Tell your dad to give the chicken house and run a good old clean out, Jayes will be fine, leave it to dry and air before putting in new bedding etc.  As you said mycoplasma does not last long in the environment without chickens around so a couple of weeks after cleaning will be fine !!!!

Tell him to make sure the birds he gets come from healthy stock and none of the sellers birds have any sniffles.  Good luck dad :D

Thanks for your comments, the main reason for being unsure is that when dad took his chook to the vet he told him that once hes got this (Mycoplasma) thats it forever the ground is contaminated and that all future birds would have it no matter what even if he lost the flock and started again.

Having said that, this is the vet that told him that once a birds had Baytril the eggs could NEVER be eaten so probably safe to assume this vet isnt a poultry specialist.

Thanks for your help.
