Christmas spuds and frost
« on: August 23, 2008, 19:38 »
I've planted some spuds for winter (first time) and they're already looking smashing. I've just earthed them up and will be keeping a close eye.

Will earthing them be sufficient to stop them being hit by frost or do I need to fleece them as well? It's a bit of a windy site, so not sure that fleece will hold.

Any advice welcome.
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

Sounds like you are off too a flyer. i have mine just coming through. Advice fro dobies was earth, straw and fleece. Tops will die back and you can leave them in the ground, just give em some prtection up top and pick as needed.

I found the space mixed with the frost damage not worth the effort.  (they were freebies given to me by another plotter on here) the spuds were really tiny and had to be dug well before Christmas anyway.  on the bright side I have some more this year from those tiny ones that didn't quite make it out of the ground.  haven't dug them up yet though and as they got blight it might be too late now anyway!

Thanks, I had a nasty feeling that they might need a bit of molly-coddling. On the plus side, I'm new to this allotment lark and still irritatingly optimistic :D  !

Well I have just dug up the extra spuds, around 2lbs worth, maybe 3lb, out of three plants which is around what I got out of 12 plants last winter!  not a huge harvest but it'll do for my sunday dinner tomorrow, I know, its monday tomorrow, but I have more time tomorrow to cook the sunday roast!

3lbs of tatties for dinner tomorrow!!!  how many are you feeding??

I have planted about 7 left over spuds and I plan on keeping these for Christmas but they came up and died off so quickly that I'm not optomistic for the amount of spuds that I'll get from them, but I will deffo leave them in the ground until needed.  That's what I did with my Christmas croppers last year (planted around sept, died off in first frosts in October    oh well, we live and learn!) and I got enough to feed us all.

This year I've got 7 - 9 ppl coming for Christmas     Knew I should have grown a turkey as well

It's not to late to plant turkeys but you'll need a heated greenhouse to put them in before the first frosts
