Confused about my Raspberries
« on: August 12, 2008, 11:27 »
Hi All

I am wondering whether my raspberries are summer or autumn croppers so i know whether to cut back or not. The problem is they have fruited twice this year, once on the older growth about 2 months ago, and then again now on the new growth! I am very confused!!

Cheers

what variety are they and how did you prune them last winter or early spring. how old are the plants and how long have you had the ground that they are on  :)

Any canes that have fruited should be cut down at ground level when they finish fruiting.

If you are left with canes that have not fruited then you have summer rasps - next years fruit will come on those canes,

If on the other hand you have cut 'em all down you have autumn rasps - they will grow new canes next year and fruit on those.

The only thing  is that autumn fruiting varieties should'nt normally be cut down until january.

I think that means you have autumn raspberries, DB.
(I think    ) Trying to get to grips with it myself, too!

Same scenario here ... had  some fruit around end of may/early june, I think ... then nothing ... now LOADS of fruit beginning to ripen again and they've grown really tall. No idea of variety. They were 3 for £1.99 in poundstretcher and just said raspberries on the box! This is the 2nd year they've been in.

Definitely fall raspberries.
Summer berries show up only in late June/early July.

after reading the post i think you have got an autumn fruiting variety possibly autumn bliss
pruning consists of just cutting all the growth down to ground level in early march :)

I do it in early winter, rather than let jobs build up for the spring.

With the weather we've had the last couple of years growth in early March would include the new stuff!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Pretty much. 8)  Why they fruited on old canes is that you did not prune them. Summer ones don't do that. Name is confusing, they are primocane, so fruit on same years growth, which summer ones don't do either.

I know some folk leave the old growth and sort of crop them twice, not commonly done, I've tried this year, they started flowering in Feb, all killed by frosts.

That'd be right then ... I planted them in feb 07 (first time growing them) didn't know what variety, so didn't prune at all after fruit. Thanks everyone it's good to know, now, that they are autumn fruiting.
(I'll prob have to come back and re-read this thread to know how and when to prune, when the time comes)
