containing and training raspberries
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:49 »
my raspberries grew about 8/9 new canes this year, which grew too tall so i trimmed them back.  however now after cutting down the old original canes that fruited this year, the new canes have sprouted again and seem to be growin like mad again.

but i don't want them getting to tall again.  is it ok to cut them back a bit?  they'll just grow new shoots won't they?  or am i not going to get any raspberries next summer now?

i will add a photo but they don't want to show up on my laptop right now so i can't see when photo is relevant!

EDIT:  this first photo was taken back in May

and this 2nd one in June

you can see the white cladding which is the top of the garage roof in the top right corner, well the new canes were as high as that! (Before i cut them to the height of the original canes).

I assume that they are summer fruiting from what you have said.

If you cut off this year's growth, you are cutting off next year's fruiting canes and won't get any!

They will doubtless sprout next year, but these will be the canes for 2010's fruit!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

oh dear, looks like no raspberries for me next year,  not that i would hav been able to reach them anyway as they would have been about 8ft up in the air!
