i want to move my strawberries and i have the perfect piece of land coming available when i dig my tates up but i keep reading that you cant put strawberries where tates have been, so my question is simple - why?

Hi Lucywil

What a poser!  I did`nt realise that you should`nt plant strawberries in the same bed as potatoes were in previously - so was very glad you asked the question.  Today I was about to do just that but devine intervention prevented me i.e; the wind and I had to deal with another problem instead.

Anyway I checked it out and you are quite correct; it is advised not to plant strawberries in the same soil previously occupied by potatoes, tomatoes or peppers.  The reason is that they could harbour the fungal disease verticillium which can infect your newly planted strawberries.

I guess it would be okay if you removed the soil and replaced it with new compost etc;
