poor potato crop
« on: July 31, 2008, 23:16 »
Our potato crop is really poor - stunted, yellowish leaf growth except for the one row my husband planted!  I was VERY generous with the chicken pellets on my patches and wonder I've accidently overdosed the poor little spuds. Can anyone cast any light on this?  Also the Mimi crop have been badly attacked by slugs. All in all I'm not a happy bunny at the moment!
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

It's very possible you over fed the spuds. Chicken manure, whether straight from source or pelleted, is quite potent. It's also higher on the acidic level which changed the pH value of your soil for a bit. That can keep the plants from absorbing other nutrients.
Next year a little more self-control should do the trick

mine are exactly the same.. but I think it was because my seed spuds were badly damaged by slugs before I got the nematode down. When I have been digging them up in some cases the seed spud is 99% gone.

I never watered my spuds. Too bloomin many to keep lugging watering cans so they've had to take their chances. So far the signs are good  :D

Hungry plants can look like that, also shaded ones, would it be possible that his row gets more light?

It sounds like I've overdosed the poor wee things!  Dave's row are at the bottom, right up against peoples' garages backing onto the lottie. Shaded, slightly raised so well drained, soil dry. Test will be when we did go see what's going on under all that lovely foliage. Hey ho, good job we can go to supermarkets and buy - wouldn't like to think we had to live on this produce over the year !!! And yes, our Mimis have been badly attacked by slugs, probably accounts for half that crop.
