Moving Cabbages?
« on: July 21, 2008, 20:47 »
Being new to growing this year I appear to have planted my cabbages to close together and they are now competing with each other.

To be honest I didn't expect the seedlings to take when I put them out.

So my question is whether it is possible to move and replant some of them or if I should just use what I take out, or should I just leave them?

On another note does anyone store onions and garlic in mesh bags and if so where do I buy them? Or does everyone just hang them?

Thanks

OB

What type are they ?  If you do decide to move them then give them plenty of water on replanting and plant deep ,right up to first leaves .

When did you sow them?

What size are they?

How close did you plant them?

I'm harvesting my Greyhound and yours may be a bit large to move, especially at this time of year when they are growing rapidly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they are still small enough, I find using a 'bulb planter' werks for me. Just be carefull with the leaves and pull them together to allow the BP to be pushed over the top of the plant and into the soil. then you can uplift and replant elsewhere. Water well for 2-3 days as said above. :)

Don't know about the cabbages but I keep my onions hung up in mesh sacks. I got mine from T&M.  :D

The cabbages were sown in Feb and planted out in April\May. They are about 18-24 inches or so across including outside leaves, the outside leaves are huge but they are hearting up okay. But there is no space between them so they are competing.

Eat every other one. Werks fer me
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Agreed, they are too large to move.
