Growing lettuce that looks like you've bought it.
« on: July 20, 2008, 20:41 »
Hello.  Brand new to the forum and brand new to growing veg.  I tried doing lettuce.  Webbs in a trench in the garden and Little Gem in a deep tray in the greenhouse.  What a disaster.  The Webbs reached 2 feet and the Little Gems went all over the place on long stalks.  Gave the lot to next doors hamsters.
Please tell me how to do it properly.

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Sounds like the Webbs bolted (ran straight to seed), poss. not enough water. Grow the Little Gem outside - they are not hot house plants!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree with DD. give em plenty of water, lettuce don't like it too warm.

And welcome to the forums  :D

What cut and come agains did you use Grannie?

I did Saladbowl and a mixed salad leaves by Mr fothergill.  Saladbowl is really quick to grow.  The mixed salad leaves are a bit slow but getting there.  Saladbowl is nice, crispy once been in fridge for a while and tasty.

I've had an amazing year, the best ever, especially with the Little Gems -really solid hearts. Not had to water much, rain's just been about right.

Mind you making a determined effort to make consecutive sowings helps, the sixth lot are coming through now.

I have so much lovely lettuce and it's all quite beautiful -my only problem this year is I wish I knew someone with a rabbit that I could give the excess to.  I did put it in a raised bed and I think that it was the best thing I did.

I'm not sure rabbits like lettuces, they've ignored mine  :D

I love little Gems, such good return for so little dosh.Their boat shaped leaves are just perfick for holding goodly amounts of mayo  :D  Or even better, Caesar dressing

Ive got some little gem in, first time ive tried it to grow it, and ive never tatsed it that I can remember....
Theyve just started to germinate, I cant wait to try them
Ive also had lakeland in this year, but thats not up to much at all, hard to germinae, slow to grow (even in pots), so I wont be bothering with that again, I know Im not alone on that one too
Ive also got some all the year round that I may try this week

Lettuce isn't great for rabbits, gets them stoned and can make them quite ill in oversupply.  They won't eat it by choice.

We've had a rubbish year for lettuce - the slugs have got most of ours.

I have some little gem seed to sow this week. I'm excited about it. Is that normal? :)

I have little gems growing, their doing really well.
I read that you should loosely tie the top of them,is this correct?

If so is this to keep the hearts nice and tight?  :?
