Lakemont Grape pruning
« on: July 20, 2008, 20:36 »
I have one that I planted in November in a very small (3 foot greenhouse).  It has reached the top and is spreading sideways.  Am I right in thinking that it should be pruned severly.  Eg remove all but one stem and not let it grow more than 3ft obviously ?

'should be pruned severly' - yes, 3 feet is not a massive size for a grape...

why have you planted it in a greenhouse.  I planted mine outside some years ago, it is trained along a perloga some 7m x 2m and would still
get bigger if I left it.  it is always covered with grapes and every winter i
cut all that years growth off.  about thre times during the some i lop it
back with shears and pruners.  it provides lovely dappled shade, grapes for us and the birds.  Mrs Bouquet

I read that Lakemont is greenhouse only.  Or is that wrong ?  I do live in London and have a very sunny wall I could use.

I just like to experiment, and I picked it up cheaply in the G.centre sick bay.  It does face south, although I am quite high up on the top of the south downs.  Your hot wall sounds good especially if you are sheltered, p
erhaps some horticultural fleece,  its just taking a chance I guess.Mrs.Bouquet
