      I have a copy of Food Crops from Your Garden and Allotment by Brian Furner which i've had since i was 20....bought it from the local library!  Ok so the advice is now dated but i love it....it really inspired me when i was younger.

I also love Self Sufficiency by John Seymour....again read when i was in my 20's and inspired me.

I also have a very old gardening handbook which was my grandmothers circa 1940's complete with black and white photos.....i just love it cos there's not a strimmer in site and is nice to reflect on a more sedate way of life and cos it was mi grannies!

Loads of others too more recent but i tend to dip in and out.

Mine are Food from your garden by the readers digest bought by my parents in the 80's, Cost effective self sufficiency or the middle class peasant cant remember how old that one is but it did change my whole view on life . Also the organic allotment by chase organics, & the vegetable garden expert.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Grow Your Own Vegetables by Joy Larkom.
Sarah Ravens Vegetable Patch one is good too but a bit poncy.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

ok so i got a few . but the 1920s issue  THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HOME GARDENING  by m james F .R.H.S  is one i consult when i really need an old idea on how to do something, printed by waverley press
hessayon range i recommend to all new gardening interns
a book given as a present is the practical gardening encyclopedia . peter mc'hoy
the RHS GARDENERS ENCYCLOPEDIA .PLANTS AND FLOWERS . i have had from 1975 given to me by a teacher on growing things i had the greatest respect for a rp smith , he could ressurect dead plants by scaring them back to life lol
also given an old copy of vegetable gardening by percy thrower
still alive /............

For all the new lottie holders out there that want to grow as organically as poss here is my well thumbed selection:-

Bob Flowerdew's Organic Bible
HDRA Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening - edited by Pauline Pears
Pauline Pears & Sue Stickland - RHS Organic Gardening
Joy Larkom - Grow your own vegetables
Geoff Hamilton - The Organic Garden Book

Any or all of these is a useful guide, the encyclopedia and geoff hamilton's book have lots of lovely pics to help inspire.

Also have Hessayon Vegetable expert - great for identifying all the nasty bugs on your crop even if you don't want to resort to the armoury of nasty chemicals it recommends for destroying them!

Also have Fork to Fork by Monty & Sarah Don which gives a good feel for what you can be growing and harvesting in season month by month.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

But if you were only to get one book, which one would it be?  Is there one that covers all of the basics and a bit more?
