Redcurrants stripped - what's happened?
« on: July 13, 2008, 23:08 »
An established redcurrant bush on my allotment last year (my first as tenant) yielded lots of fruit - at least 2kg as I recall. This year I again protected the bush with small-mesh netting to keep the birds off; I'm sure it was firmly fixed all round at ground level. But all the clusters of fruit, including those away from the netting towards the middle of the bush, have been almost completely stripped like this one:

Is there any possible explanation other than birds? The netting has been secure and undisturbed since May, and there has been no sign of birds being caught inside it at any stage. I can imagine birds reaching some fruit close to the netting, but not virtually all of it inside the bush.

The crop is a write-off this year, but I'd be interested in any ideas about what's happened, and suggestions for preventing the problem in future.

If you don't think birds have been the cause then it can only have been our old friends Rattus Rattus or Mice.

Homo Sapiens can be more cunning than foxes. They put the netting back where they found it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for these suggestions. The first one is the most plausible.

Time for a rant.
I have a load of lettuces...more than we need, but I can offload the surplus on family/neighbours/colleagues/random people walking down the street....but just because I have so many, it doesn't mean that someone can help themselves; blimey I'm delighted they think they look nice enough to nick, but just come and ask if I have a spare or two, and I'll happily part with them, but theft is plainly and simply WRONG !!!!!!!!!
I feel like Tom Good when the bloke was nicking his leeks.
It makes me angry.
Rant Over, thankyou for your time and patience, and sorry to hijack the thread
