I am a beginner and I already have pests
« on: July 13, 2008, 19:20 »
Hello

I have just discovered this great website.

I am a beginner for growing vegetables.  I don’t have a garden or allotment, I am growing vegetable in pots on my front driveway.

I have the following:

Radish
Lettuce
Mizuna
Carrots
1 x Broad beans
1 x Strawberry plant
2 x Tomato plant
1 x Pepper plant.
Cauliflower

The plants are being attacked, and I suspect it to be either Cats or Squirrels.

The strawberry plant was being dug up and something started to chew through its roots.  I covered the compost with stone and the plant has recovered and the attack has now stopped.

I have been out today, and when I came home, I found that something had dug up a single mizuna, and had dug a hole next to a radish.  The one strawberry that was growing was also taken. and a small pot was turned over.

Is there any way of knowing what has been attacking the plants?

Here is a pic of some of the plants.

Thanks

Webcam?

I think the only way is to catch it in the act!

Sorry to hear about your problems, but welcome to the forums anyway!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My guess would be squirrels, but it might be blackbirds or pigeons looking for bugs. Only sure way to know is to see the blighter(s) in action. I like the web-cam idea.  :D
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Could be a few things I guess, but we have (for the last few years!) foxes in our garden (mother and 3 cubs this year, 5 cubs last year) and the cubs seem to like digging around. They have dug up a few of my onions and new potatoes, seem to like eating strawberries, and flattened a couple of sweetcorn plants by charging around. I gather they often dig for earthworms!
Bit annoying at times but we have had great pleasure from watching them romping around like little puppies and  often come down in the morning to see the vixen lying in the sun on the lawn having a break from the "kids"
