What can I plant in my allotment now?
« on: July 13, 2008, 17:49 »
Hello All.

Haven't been to the allotment for a while due to health reasons and a number of other things life chooses to throw at us every once in a while.  Anyway, been up there today and while I was really pleased with my sweetcorn, my courgettes have all been eaten as have my brussel sprouts!!  So I've got two pretty big beds with nothing in them!!

So my question is: what can I plant now?  Could I put peas or beans in?  When do you plant winter cabbage?  Somone's told us to try putting some more spuds in - would this be ok?  I'd really like to grow something more than sweetcorn in my first year!!

Thanks,

Spring cabbage can go in in August, turnips, swede (ps broccoli and cauli  if you germinate them quickly) and also salad crops.

I put a seed tray of about 20 paper pots (with a propergator lid) in my dalek compost bin last week, I planted 1/2 of them out last night, the ones that were left in the walled patio to get on with it are much slower.

Will maybe try this for broccoli and cauli (If I can turn over new ground to put it in quick enough)

The greyhound cabbage would probably still be ok, from what i understand if they dont make it into proper cabbages then you just eat them as greens - i think the greyhound takes about 12 weeks.

Hi all

I'm new to all this myself and have only had my allotment for about 4 weeks now. I've been looking at what I can get planted now.

Along with some of the other bits already mentioned, I reckon I will also try some perpeutual spinach and some chinese radishes.

And then towards the end of August I'm going to chance my arm with some japanese onions...

Hi Jono,

I would suggest nearly all the summer salad crops. But all the seeds packets will supply the requested info'. If you live in the southern part of the country you can add at least three weeks to what they say because it's warmer.

hope this helps.

Does this mean I could still plant peas in July? All my peas got annihilated; managed to plant a half a row a few weeks back that seems to be dodging the wildlife, but would love to put some more in....

If I recall DD's reply to a similar question, you might still get a small crop, particularly if you sow an early variety - though you might also suffer mildew.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That's correct.

One year I did quite well - another the mildew got them.

I've just popped a few spare seed in myself.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks everyone. All very helpful.

Is the advice on seed packets just general advice then? Should I stick to it as much as pssible but break the rules slightly dependant on the weather and whether I feel the risk is worth the reward?

Little Lisa - I'm definitely gonna try planting some peas over the course of this week and I'll just see what happens over the coming months...
