Courgettes: only male flowers?
« on: July 11, 2008, 13:37 »
I have a few courgette plants in the greenhouse this year. I've got loads of big yellow flowers on them, but none show the thick bit indicating that they may develop fruit. It looks like I got about 30 male flowers on the plants, and not a single female flower. Does anybody have any experience with this? Anything I can do to improve the situation?

thank you,

Vincent
Cheers,
Vincent

Perhaps they are stressed at being cramped up in a greenhouse.

They really need to be outside with bags of room.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

do you think it would work if I put them outside now, or would that be too late?

I've been growing courgettes for the last 4 years and I always find that the first flowers on the plants are male ones ... the female ones seem to start coming about 1.5 to 2 weeks after the males.
Hopefully it will just be a case of being patient! :)
How do the plants look otherwise - are the leaves looking green and healthy?

yes, the plants look really healthy so I am still hopeful of a good crop. I'll exercise a bit more patience then.

Not 30 though! Crowded, shaded, cold.
