potato fruits?

I've never seen these before... but this is only my 2nd year of growing potatoes.

I was having a rummage around my spuds this week when I came across these little tomato type fruits hanging from them.

Sorry for the blurry photos - I took them on my phone.

Being part of the deadly nightshade family, potatoes will actually grow a fruit. I'm not sure whether or not it's edible as such (I wouldn't try), but its a good start if you're into breeding new varieties. Otherwise, ignore them.

The contain a toxic alkaloid called solanine which is the same as in nightshade.

These 'fruits' are where new varietys of potatoes come from but the vast majority of them wouldn't be worth bothering with. You'd have to bevery lucky to get anything worth while.
