Something not wanted in my polytunnel
« on: July 05, 2008, 13:54 »
I should have carried on but though as this is a different thing i would start afresh.

In my tunnel I am growing tomatoes, melons, cucumber, peppers, lettuce and beetroot.  Most things are doing well except for the melons and cucumbers.  Both lots of plants seem to be affected by the same thing which is a ?mite or something which is a tiny white bug on he top of the leaf and the same but black on the back.  The plants appear to be covered and the leaves are all curling up into tight balls.

Any ideas what it is and what i should do and will it come back next year?

Help!
Living the very busy retired life I never thought  would have

Commonest thing in gh is whitefly, hard to say about the rest without seeing, but if you don't act they shall not disappear, all sorts of sap suckers will spread and multiply.

Take off bad leaves and spray with a soft soap solution.

Thanks for the replies

I have scrapped the offending plants and wonder if it would be ok to replant a couple of cucumber plants in the tunnel?

Do you think that I can clear this problem over winter?

I have a raised bed in the tunnel and was going to cover it in black plastic over winter to get rid of the weeds.

I also have some very well rotted deer manure ( I have deer in the next field - pets of my neighbour).  This I was going to put on the bed is this a good idea?

Sorry - lots of queries.

If you do not fumigate the place one way or other not that they will come back , they will stay.

That you can't spot them on other plants, does not neccessarily mean they are not there, but you can re-plant, just need to do something about it. There is a preditory wasp sold for whitefly too, if you prefer, won't sort the unknown bugs out though.

Deer manure is fine, getting rid of weeds is a good idea.
