Cucumber has stopped producing
« on: July 04, 2008, 14:46 »
My cucumber "Femspot" has stopped producing cucumbers.

It is in the greenhouse in a growbag with 2 Gardeners Delight toms and gets a weak tomato feed every other watering (which is daily at the moment).
It did produce 3 nice cukes but since then all the baby cukes go yellow at about 2 inches long and drop off.

Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong. The plant itself seems ok apart from a few yellowing leaves.

Thanks

Might it be just very thirsty if in the same bag with the toms?

Could be too dry, toms take up a lot of water. Or could be waterlogged. So check the moisture of the soil thooughout the day, greenhouse cucs are very picky    They don't like drafts but they need good ventillation.  Try given them a foliar feed, I think they are hungrier than toms.

They are not easy to grow in the same area as tomatoes as they need a higher himidity.  Keep the floor wet but tell the toms not to complain

Thanks, I did wonder if I was doing the right thing by putting them in the same bag (but did it anyway   ).

I doubt it's too wet or too dry as I keep the bags evenly moist and they do have drainage holes.

More likely to do with the feeding and humidity I think, I'll try foliar feeding them. I went and bought a new plant on Monday just in case this one gives up the ghost and have just noticed today it's a pickling one!

I'll learn one day....

I've just read in a gardening magazine that you should remove all side shoots on cucumber plants and encourage one main stem.

Is this correct, because I haven't been! Perhaps that has answered my question?

With a greenhouse cuc you should grow the main stem up to the roof and then pinch it out to encourage side shoots. Pinch out the side shoots 2 leaves beyond a female flower.

Well that's what Hessayon says but I just leave mine to do their own thing and they inundate me with cucumbers  :D

This is going to sound very stupid.....

Should cucs be outside??

Cause mine is.... I covered in a large plastic bottle to keep it warm with old grass cuttings around the base... it does not look very happy though!!

Tried epsom salt but maybe I should put it in my little plastic greenhouse instead??!!

Its my first year....  an I am loving it!

It all depends on the variety.

Ridge cultivars are happy outside.

What variety are you growing?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just read the bit about the plastic bottle - missed that before.

Be very careful with these IMHO. If the sun comes out, (not been unknown), you can cook the plant.

Don't wish to hijack this thread but I have the same problem. Growing Petita (always do) and had a couple of fruits a while back. Plants are looking very healthy (2 in separate 12" pots) and have loads of small fruits but none are developing. Eventually going yellow and dropping. (have also had horrendous leaf folding on my tomatoes - I get some of this every year but terrible this year)

As far as I know, I've done nothing different this year from previous and usually have loads. I water every day and feed with a variety of things - tomato food, a few chicken manure pellets left to soak in the watering can, watered down liquid from soaked pig muck (not each day you understand) - boy do I spoil them!

This year's plants look more healthy than for years, yet no fruits maturing??

I've cut the side shoots off mine and it seems to have perked up and is producing a few fruits and holding on them. Fingers crossed.....
