Mystified - Hen Missing! -update happy ending!
« on: June 22, 2008, 17:45 »
Very peculiar -just checked on my birds, and I have a hen missing, a small bantam australrop. No feathers anywhere -in the run, around the run, no other birds missing. Must've gone between 9am and 3ish. Electric fence on-although there was a small gap where I have moved the fence and not trodden it in -but surely if that was the case there would have been feathers and why no others birds slaughtered?
Very strange. My other thought was possibly a raptor? would a buzzard have taken her? Racking my brains here, any thoughts welcome. Very sad she was one of favourites  :(  :(

It could possibly be a buzzard or a hen harrier, or so i've read. It certainly would explain the lack feathers/blood. Or you might just have a bird on a holiday! (hopefully)

Were her wings clipped ?

Any way she could over the fence ?

If something spooked her would she head for the hills ?

Hope she turns up when she's hungry.

Rob  :)

A friend of mine has many hens and a few of them are bantams.  A couple of years ago her bantams were disappearing one by one, after a some days she found that magpies were taking the smallest hens.  I hope that this is not so in your case.   Hopefully she will pop up again when you are not looking!  Or as Rob says, she might turn up when she is hungry.  Will keep my fingers crossed for you

Well she is still missing, yes Ness she was one of the eternal broodies -and is/was broody. She is small about the size of a largish pigeon I guess. It has  been very breezy but she doesn't tend to fly out anymore. I wondered if she had died suddenly in the run as was taken? We do have buzzards and something else recently I think was a sparrowhawk it was hovering quite low -looked a little like a kestrel but a lot bigger.
I have double checked the electric fence and it is on high power, will bait it tonight and if it is a fox it will get a hell of a shock.
Really miss her, a lovely sweet natured little hen.

So sorry to hear this Foxy. :(  If it was a sparrowhawk you'd find feathers as when they've taken my doves, they pluck them in situ. It's horrible to see. I do hope that she's just off exploring, everything crossed that she comes back. If youreally think it was a hawek, put a scarecrow up and keep moving it round, they don't like change and it will probably pursuade them to hunt elsewhere.

Fingers crossed,
Judi

Sorry to hear about your missing girl, hope she turns up. Certainly could be a raptor/magpie etc, was amazed that a magpie managed to take 2 week old ducklings, they were about 2/3 the size of the magpie (although a lot of fluff). That being said there was evidence of the kill (small puddle of blood) as they killed them on the ground.

Hope she turns up safe.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
