Croup bound
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:16 »
Hello may be I should change my paranoid and roughlee handled.   Ok read about croup bound and long grass last night and when putting the girls to bed noticed they had very large croups.  Thought not to much about it but thought check them in the morning feel the croup and see.  This morning I forgot when i let them out and then remembered 15 mins later. Durrrr Sleepy head.  So caught and felt croups of both girls and they were about golf ball size and visibly not to prominent. Oh and they where eating. They have found out about slugs and very funny when one grabs a slug and runs off.
Long Grass

hi P&RH( :D )!
If your girls are used to free ranging and are at POL I wouldnt worry too much! By the looks of things they will have plenty of natural grit anyway. You could put out a flowerpot with extra grit mixed with oyster shell if you are concerned. It would be unusual for both to have impacted crops at the same time!
If they were chicks or growers then would be different as their crops wouldn't be developed enough to cope with more fibrous material.
Lovey pics by the way, lucky chickens!

I agree with Foxy   crops are funny things at the best of times its best to go by the overall well being of the chook in that if they are eating and drinking and bright and chirpy  the I would assume they are ok. If they were lethargic, not eating or drinking then, I would look for the problem 8) Hope this helps :D
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Crops are there to be stuffed during the day as the birds forage. I'd only be concerned if they had extended crops in the morning after having spent a full night on their perch digesting their food.
Don't worry, havent you ever had to slacken your belt after a large meal. :D

Thanks Foxy and Jellyhead. I feel like a medical student reading about deceases and then diagnosing myself with a problem or in my case my girls with a problem.

Thank you
