Help with Onions & Leeks
« on: June 19, 2008, 19:10 »
So my onions are looking great, they are swelling up and the bulbs are pushing up out the ground. Do I leave them like this until the leaves turn brown/yellow and I harvest or do I need to cover them up with some soil?

My leeks which were planted in March don't look so good, all the books say to plant them out to their final place when they are pencil thick (generally May/June) but mine seem far from pencil thick and probably only 2-3 inches tall. Am I just being impatient or am I missing something? I think they are Musselborough

TIA

Leave the onions to be until they flop and die back, I'd plant out the leeks as they are.

Thanks Gobs, I had kinda decided i'd got nothing to lose with the leeks, so we'll see how they go.

I agree I have had the same thing this year where they aren't thickening up so about 2 weeks ago I planted a dozen anyway to see what happens and they are thickening up beautifully. So the rest will go in over the weekend

My onions and leeks are nearest and to the right of the path.
They look like grass and both grow very very slowly?

Got lots of colored Chard planted. [very photogenic]

Running out of space as things get bigger.
