courgettes between runner beans?
« on: June 15, 2008, 20:41 »
hi all,

another newbe question. we have quite a bit of space between the runner bean poles which are in rows

we have courgettes in pots at home and are nearly ready to be planted out.

is there any problem planting the courgettes between the runner bean poles?
if not is there anything you can grow in this space, just seems like a bit of a waste at the moment

Thanks,

vaughny

Not quite sure what the layout of your bean poles is vaughny

Don't suppose you have a picture do you.

Courgette plants get quite large and crop at the same time as runners,  might that be a problem ?

dont have any pics to hand i'm afraid but its basically like..

 /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\

(8 sets - 8 foot each pole) with a pole across the top. the distance between the base of a /\ is about 70cm, the distance between two /\ /\ is about 50cm

does that make any sense?

Grow lettuce between the poles, they are quick to mature and will appreciate the shade.

Hi vaughny - as I was a bit stuck for space and as the pumkins and squashes  are happy on the raised mound I stuck my courgettes in betweeen the beans one at each end of the row and one in the middle - mind you its a twenty foot row and the rows of sticks are about 18ins apart and the in thew row about 1ft apart if that makes sense - I hope they will be ok but as is said time will tell. Nothing lost by giving them a go I say :)
