Fingers crossed Kim its not quite as easy with a broody to see what is going on is it?

I had the first chick hatch at 2am, another at 8am and two more so far.  There are another five eggs in the incubator which four of them have now got little holes in so hopefully they will all be out by tonight.  As far as I can tell I have two cockerels and two hens at the moment so lets hope for more hens.  :D
40 hens, 8 cockerels, 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, 8 chinchillas, 2 teenage daughters and O/H

Keeping my fingers crossed for you both.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I have dreadful news……………
This morning the broody got off the nest and I went down for a peak and found one egg piping and another that was cracked so just left them alone. Later on in the morning she got off again and I thought that’s odd so went to have another look and still one was piping but the other looked like it had been trodden on. Covered in blood and really looking yuk I brought it in to dispose of it as I thought it was dead but it wasn’t it was still alive. I set to work getting the shell off and then peeling back the membrane and this little soul is fighting like mad under a heat lamp and we just hope it makes it through the night.

While all this was going on I went down to check on the broody and was horrified to see that the chick that was piping had hatched and the broody has killed it and thrown it out of nest.
The other three eggs under the broody have been removed and popped under a friends broody hen hoping we have a chance of them hatching safely.

I am heart broken about this not only for us but also the broody who has worked so hard sitting on the eggs so long and then she kills them.

Aww Kim I am so sorry.  I will cross my fingers, toes and everything else I have that the little one makes it and the remaining eggs hatch ok.

I wonder why she killed the hatched one though, that is very odd.  It makes me weary of adding my chicks to my broody, I think I will wait another day before I give it a go at least that way the chicks will be a little stronger and not so wobbly on their feet.

Gosh that was stressful viewing.  I hardly dared to scroll down through the pics but was so surprised to see the end result.  You must be so relieved, Katt!  And doesn't she look adorable.  V.cute.

The little chap has made it through another night and I have ordered it it's very own electric hen............................oh yes I have!

A very good friend of mine who is an experienced Orpington breeder had a look at the pic’s and from looking at the egg sack says the chick was approximately 2 – 3 days premature.
